Most of the cargo vessels run on Heavy Fuel Oil (a heavy distillate/residue obtained after almost everything else has been distilled out of crude oil). This type of fuel is very viscous and therefore the ships have heating and purification systems for this fuel prior it can be used in vessel’s Main Engine (Propulsion) and Auxiliary Engines (Electrical Generators).Ships generally use 3 types of fuels . Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) , Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (LSFO) and diesel oil.
